An experienced middle school science teacher who received her Ed.D. in Curriculum, Advocacy, and Policy talks about being a role model both in her family and in her Latino community.

At National Louis University (NLU), we encourage our students to be lifelong learners. While we’re always excited to help high school seniors graduate and secure their first jobs, we’re equally excited to help seasoned professionals advance in their careers as their dreams and aspirations evolve. Toni Carmichael, a middle school science teacher in Mundelein, IL, embodies the Ea of lifelong learning. Toni earned her M.Ed. from NLU in 2004 and spent years thereafter inspiring students in the space. However, when she decided to go back to school to pursue her PhD in Education, she did not hesitate to return to NLU:

“Having the opportunity to choose a doctoral program at any university, I chose National Louis University because I recognized the opportunities that would benefit my development as an educator, both at an intermediate level and as an undergraduate would.”*100011 *

“As a first generation college graduate and the first in my family to be accepted into a PhD program, the responsibility of being a role model to your family and the Latino community is both an honor and a struggle to make that difference do.”* 100021*

However, her time in the doctoral program at NLU was not without its challenges. Toni says her NLU professors were always there to encourage her when self-doubt crept in.

“As a scientist and Latina/Filipina, the biggest obstacle I had to overcome was the certainty that my scientific knowledge would be valued in the scientific community,” says Toni. “I have always been determined to achieve whatever I can and to be a role model to be the best scientist I can. I have been encouraged by many professors to make this potential a reality, but those who have really encouraged me are: Dr. Lukenchuk, Dr. Price and Dr. Sahagun Bahena. I wouldn’t be where I am today without these professors who encourage, challenge and encourage me to do my best.”

Toni describes her future career as a “motivator” and intends to publish several scientific articles during her doctoral program and to secure a professorship at a university after graduation.

“I would like to teach at a university or college to empower future teachers as I have been empowered. I would also like to write a book about how STEM education and Latinas are important components for the future of science education,” says Toni.

In keeping with her role as a motivator, Toni encourages her fellow NLU/Kendall students to pursue their dreams:
