Robertson taught physical education in North Carolina for eight years.[14][17]

Although she began her public speaking career with her pageant title, Robertson gained much more national attention as a humorist and public speaker. Her anecdotes have been regularly aired on satellite radio comedy channels including Laugh USAby XM Radio, Blue Collar Comedy by Sirius Radio and its Family Comedy Channel[15][2] and *100107* Laugh break. However, her popularity rose sharply in 2009 after a handful of humorous clips from her lectures became popular videos.[12][2] Distinguishing between a humorist, whom she called herself, and a comedian, Robertson stated, “The humorist weaves the longer stories with a dot. We don’t go after anyone. I tell my life.”

She was named a Certified Speaking Professional by the National Speakers Association in 1980 and was the Association’s gift in 1985.[15] She was also a Golden Hammer Toastmaster.[2][15][18]

Jeanne Flinn Swanner was born at Naval Hospital Boston in Chelsea, Massachusetts and grew up in Graham, North Carolina,[4][2] one of three daughters. According to one of her YouTube video clips, not only was she taller than sisters Katherine and Andrea, she was also particularly tall as a teenager, growing to 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) by the age of 13.[5] She was an AV basketball player.[2]

1963, at the age of 19, she was named Miss North Carolina[6][7] and elected Miss Congeniality in the same year.[8][2][9] As of 2021, Jeanne Swanner is still the tallest ever contestant in the Miss America pageant at 6ft 2.[10] Robertson credited her reign as a catalyst for her career.

After her tenure as Miss North Carolina, Robertson used her scholarship to fund her college education at Auburn University, where she majored in physical education, joined Alpha Gamma Delta [13] and played college basketball. 14] Robertson graduated in 1967 [15] and was inducted as a past member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Circle at Auburn University in 1990.[16]

Jeanne married Walter Bowline III in 1965; They had one son and divorced in the early 1970s.[3] In 1974 she married Jerry Robertson,[20] a graduate of Duke University, where he was 6’2″ and on an athletic scholarship[21] and played on their basketball team, serving as its captain in 1959.[22] [2] Jerry received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of North Carolina;[21] he was an educator and principal, eventually serving as superintendent of Burlington City Schools and later working in business.[2][23][24] In her performances, Jeanne frequently referred to him as “Left Brain” or sometimes “LB”.[20][23] They were married until his death in June 2021.[23][24]

Robertson’s son, Walter Bailey “Beaver” Bowline, is a 1989 graduate of Elon University, where Jeanne was a trustee.[15][1] Two of Jeanne’s grandchildren also visited Elon.[25] Jeanne and Jerry Robertson were both members of Elon University’s Phoenix Club, which supports the athletic program, [15] and the university’s track and field complex is named after the couple.

On Saturday, November 4th, a group from TIHAA and their friends/relatives ventured into downtown Houston to dine at Irma’s Southwest Grill and enjoy Jeanne Robertson’s show at The Revention Music Center (formerly known as: Albert Thomas Convention Center & Bayou Place). Planning for this trip began months in advance, before Hurricane Harvey. Back then we had planned to eat at the Spaghetti Warehouse, which thanks to Harvey is gone. So I started calling the restaurant near the theater. The only restaurant that responded and took my reservation was Irma’s Southwest Grill. This turned out to be a blessing. The food was delicious, the service was very efficient and there was no problem with separate checks. The day before the restaurant manager calls to confirm the number of people present so he has enough staff to get us to the show on time. As you can see, I highly recommend Irma’s Southwest Grill. At Irma’s we met another group known as “Young at Heart”. The leader of this group is a friend of mine named Marion. While we were in the restaurant, I did a reverse draw to give everyone a bag of candy – the last two bags contained a $2 bill. One was won by Joan Jackson in Marion’s group. She wrote me a sweet thank you note saying she had spent the money on quilting supplies at JoAnn’s. The other was won by Ralph Garcia and I assume he’s saving his for luck! We left Irma’s with plenty of time to do the show; However, we were stuck in a traffic jam half a block from the theater so we all got out and walked a short distance to the theater only to find the line was almost a block long to get in. We need to remember that Not only do we have to go through security at airports, but wherever crowds congregate, even when it comes to seeing a 73-year-old comedian in a rocking chair.

Jeanne Robertson was on stage when we entered the theater, it was her performance before the show. Al Jeanne’s manager then sang and played guitar before making the formal introduction for Jeanne and opening the performance. Jeanne began by explaining the need for the rocking chair on stage. It appears she slipped and broke her femur while preparing for a party in her game room (which she believed was a garage with a pool table). She said this is not to be confused with a broken leg, which is much worse. She said when paramedics arrived they said they would need a second ambulance to attend to her, meaning they would not have enough morphine in their ambulance to take care of someone her 6ft tall 2 inches to worry about. Then, to add insult to injury, a neighbor started pounding on the ambulance as it was taking Jeanne to the hospital, shouting, “Is the party still going?” Jeanne said she spent 3 months in rehab and narrated several stories about her recovery. You could relate to all of this if you’ve ever had to recover from surgery or a broken bone. She said she was tired of rest and wanted to go back to work; However, she could only feel comfortable doing this when she was sitting in a rocking chair. It wasn’t just any chair, it was one of the kind you see outside of the Cracker Barrel restaurants, and she said they were giving away – a rocking chair from the entries received online by the next day. I wasn’t a rocking chair winner, but I was a winner because I enjoyed Jeanne’s humor, and you can if you want to watch her on Jeanne Robertson or listen to her stories on iTunes.

We were 17 who attended the performance. I wouldn’t take photos though, so you’ll have to use your imagination to see what we looked like because nobody sent me a selfie.
