Rossana Maiorca is a Freedive and the daughter of Enzo Maiorca. Rossana Maiorca’s father, Enzo was an Italian free diver who held several world freediving records. Born Vincenzo Maiorca on 21 June 1931 in Syracuse, Sicily, he died on 13 November 2016 in the same city.

Rossana Maiorca (born in 1960 and died on January 7, 2005, in Mestre, a frazione from the municipality of Venice ) is an Italian freediver. Rossana Maiorca was several times a world record holder for freediving immersion. In 1989, she achieved the first single-fin world record in Syracuse.

Rossana Maiorca is the daughter of the famous Sicilian freediver Enzo Maiorca and the sister of another famous freediver, Patrizia Maiorca.  Rossana Maiorca died in 2005 from cancer at the age of 45. Rossana Maiorca death was caused by cancer, but the specific cancer that caused her death has not been made public.

Rossana Maiorca‘s father Enzo learned to swim at age 4 and soon began to dive, although expressing great fear of the sea.

Enzo Maiorca, often nicknamed ‘the Lord of the Deep’ due to his numerous depth records. In 1960, Maiorca defeated the Brazilian Amerigo Santarelli 45 meters underwater, to then beat him once again at a rematch, reaching 49 meters. The French Jacques Mayol was also among his many rivals throughout the years, having competed against him the most times for the world record.

 In fact, the friendship and rivalry between Mayol and Maiorca were depicted in the heavily fictionalized 1988 film ‘Le Grand Bleu’ by French director Luc Besson.

 Abandoning competition in 1976, Maiorca later returned to diving, spurred on by his two daughters Patrizia and Rossana (the latter died of cancer in 2005), both involved in the same discipline, and reached his ultimate 101-meter record.

 A devout vegetarian, the record holder announced in an interview that he had given up underwater fishing after declaring the activity, “the killing of a living being mad with fear.” Hence, the environmentalist association Legambiente sa of the late champion, “He has not just become a great friend, but a devout environmentalist, ecologist, and companion of numerous battles and campaigns in defense of the same seas he has competed in so many times.”

Enzo Maiorca was born in Syracuse, Italy on June 21, 1931, and would grow up to become one of the world’s most accomplished breath-hold diving in history.

At 4, he learned how to swim but it took him to reach 25 to be convinced to try to break a record after his friend showed him an article about a depth record set by Ennio Falco and Alberto Novelli.

He nonetheless d not break that record until he reached 29 when he went 45 meters into the depth of the water. He stole the title from a Brazillian, Americo Santarelli who would in turn counter the record with a 46 meters depth.

In 1988, her father made a record of 101 meters in the sport.

He also won awards, including:

  • Gold Medal of the Present of the Republic (1964) for athletic prowess
  • Gold Medal of Merit Marina (for the sports and defense of the environment, 2006)
  • He was the first man to the threshold of 100 meters deep in apnea

Rossana Maiorca Helped in Rescuing a Pregnant Dolphin 

Her father told her that he felt something slightly hit his back and realized that it was a dolphin. He would also be exposed to the need of the dolphin after he accompanied the animal to where a female specie was trapped in a net.

Rossana got the diving knife to help take the female dolphin out. The father and daughter took the animal to the top of the water to give her care. They would realize that she was pregnant.

According to reports, the dolphin would kiss her father goodbye after they had saved it.

How She Died, was Dubbed the Marma of Sicily, and Her Statue was Made

After she placed herself in the league of names to reckon with as far as holding her breath in swimming is concerned, the former diver died on January 6, 2005, at the age of 45.

Her death which met her in Mestre, Venice, Italy is related to the complications of cancer.

After her death, her contribution to the environment, especially through the water would make her be remembered. This is event in the golden statue (named Marma of Sicily) of Rossana Maiorca which was created by sculptor Pietro Marchese in 2008 in Gli Archi.

At 85 on 13 November 2016, about 11 years following the death of the younger Maiora, her father also died.
