Michael Anthony Stepovich (March 12, 1919 – February 14, 2014) was an American attorney and politician who served as the last non-acting governor of the Alaska Territory. After his education and military service during World War II, Stepovich established a law practice in his hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska, and began his political career by winning three terms in the Alaska Territory legislature. During his tenure as governor, he was a leading advocate for Alaska’s statehood efforts. After Alaska’s admission into the Union, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States Senate and made two unsuccessful attempts to be elected governor of Alaska.

Stepovich served in the public service for decades, from his service in World War II to his post-statehood political career. He was instrumental in efforts to gain Alaskan statehood, beginning with his appointment as governor in 1957.

Stepovich’s appointment as Governor of the Alaska Territory came on the recommendation of US Secretary of the Interior Fred Seeton. Seaton had traveled to the territory to interview potential candidates following the resignation of Governor B. Frank Heintzleman. Although Fairbanks’ attorney did not apply for the position, Seaton was nonetheless impressed.[5] The current Dwight Eisenhower nominated Stepovich for the position on May 9, 1957, and took office on June 5 as the territory’s first non-acting governor.

Much of the new governor’s term was spent campaigning for Alaska’s statehood.[3] In this effort, he traveled widely throughout the continental United States speaking and interviewing on behalf of the territory.[8] His efforts even included an appearance on the January 19, 1958 game show What’s My Line?[9][10]

Stepovich sat in the House Gallery as the House of Representatives cast their ballot on the Alaska Statehood Act. On his passage through the house, Stepovich would meet with delegate E.L. “Bob” Bartlett, and Leo W. O’Brien, representatives from New York, and John Saylor, representatives from Pennsylvania. The bill passed despite opposition from the powerful Rules Committee chairman, Virginia Representative Howard Smith, and House Minority Leader Joe Martin. This was because of powerful House Speaker Sam Rayburn, who was one of the most influential members of Congress and strongly supported the Alaska Statehood Act, in part because Alaska was heavily Democratic. Cheers came from the streets of Alaska as the news reached the soon-to-be state, and one Alaskan native remarked, “It’s a good thing. I like it when things go down well. I will enjoy my first vote for Present.” [5]

Stepovich’s B for a US Senate seat was unsuccessful. He was defeated by Ernest Gruening in the November 25, 1958 elections held just before Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959.[12]

In 1960, Stepovich fought an unsuccessful ballot initiative to move the state capital from Juneau, Alaska, to Anchorage, Alaska.[13]

Stepovich ran for governor of Alaska in 1962 and won the Republican nomination, but was narrowly defeated by Democratic incumbent William A. Egan.

Stepovich lost to Wally Hickel in the 1966 Republican primary for governor. This was his last campaign for office.[16]

After his unsuccessful bid for Senate, Stepovich returned to his law practice in Fairbanks.[3] He stayed there until 1978, when he and his wife moved to Medford, Oregon.[8] Despite the move, the former governor retained his legal residence in Fairbanks.[3]

Stepovich was born on March 12, 1919 in Fairbanks, Alaska to a prominent Montenegrin miner father, Michael “Wise Mike” Stepovich,[1][2] and a Croatian mother, Olga (of Sutivan, Brač). [3] The Stijepovich family is one of the oldest families in Risan, now Montenegro.[4] His father, originally Marko, moved to the USA from there in 1892. His parents divorced when he was 6 months old and his mother took him to Portland, Oregon[5] where he was raised by his mother and stepfather. Stepovich was educated in parochial schools and at the Columbia Preparatory School in Portland before enrolling at the University of Portland in 1937. He graduated from Gonzaga University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1943 from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Laws ]

After completing his law degree, Stepovich enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to the Camp Parks law firm.[3] After three and a half years of military service, he was discharged as Yeoman Third. After his release in 1947, he briefly returned to Portland to court his future wife before moving to Fairbanks, Alaska.

Stepovich married Matilda Baricevic in November 1947. The couple had 13 children.[3] His daughter Nada married NBA player John Stockton.[17] His niece is actress and playwright Nicole Burdette.[18]

On November 25, 2003, Stepovich’s wife Matilda died.[19]

Stepovich received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks on May 10, 2009.[8]

While visiting his son in San Diego, California, Stepovich suffered a head injury from a fall.[20] He died on February 14, 2014 after spending six days in a hospital.[21] Stepovich’s body was returned to Fairbanks, Alaska. A memorial service was held for him at Sacred Heart Cathedral on February 28, 2014, followed by a funeral at Birch Hill Cemetery.[22]
