  1. I wish we went to the same school because I have never met someone so intellectual on these topics. I would def have loved to have this conversation with you.

  2. What the heck is this poser stuff? And why does Youtube suggest fringe/ generic/ spoiled people making up stuff on the fly because they are bored and desperate to stand out/ poser stuff to me of all people!?!?!?!

  3. I never made a finsta, but sometimes I would post certain things I liked or found amusing and would barely get likes. I’d see people with 100s-1000s of followers get likes on their “ironic” or silly posts that showed their personality. I realized that I would’ve needed to make a separate page for specific people to appreciate those types of posts that my main followers might find weird or uninteresting. I never did, but similarly I made an artsy/fashion inspo page similar to my tumblr dashboard. It later became my photography account.

  4. I feel like our obsession of celebrities etc adds to the popularity of finstas too. when you post on your finsta it feels like you're the centre of attention in a way, and that the little details about your life are just as important to the few followers you allow on the account – just as how when your favourite celebrity, influencer, etc post glimpses into their lives it feels so important to you personally because of the care you put into them. Also, with the emotional rants on a finsta it feels like a diary entry only this time with an audience, and because there's this feeling of anonymity people will overshare etc as if it were a diary too. anyways…

  5. I honestly stopped using my finsta when the pandemic too, mostly because of Snapchat private stories, but I also felt like it was because of TikTok. I would see all these creators my age creating relatable content and just kind of lived vicariously through them.. if that makes sense

  6. it's so weird to see my friends make their acounts into finstas – like, what happened to just following cool art accounts? and maybe some meme accounts for a few laughs? y'all don't have share every thought you think, it's just unhealthy at this point.

  7. Am I the only one who had a “finsta” before 2017 but we called it a “spam account” and only let close friends follow it

  8. When she said she spent 30 minutes trying to come up with a caption that’s so real. Like I literally have no idea what to put as a caption on my selfies. It’s actually v stressful

  9. I use my main as a finsta since the beginning 😂
Thank god for the close friends feature and the possibility to set your acc private

But I'd only put people i see at least monthly to CF

  10. the solution, I'm afraid, just maybe … is to delete all that shit. share your feelings with a therapist and/or your friends and family. text them or see them in person. take pictures and i dunno frame them in your house or just leave them on your phone. look at them when your phone sends you those one year reminders. rinse repeat

  11. It's weird, people want to share everything about themselves on social media (myself included) because it's the only time you are in a group environment where there isn't a punitive authority watching over you such as in school or work.

  12. I noticed how once I stopped over sharing with my own friends, and worked on my own mental and emotional shit, they gradually drifted away. One by one, they stopped talking to me. It was as if our relationships were built on a foundation of suffering together only🧍🏽‍♀️I say this because literally I used to be able to text people for hours on end when it was some drama or some bs we were discussing but just having a genuine conversation about how their day was or something, the convo would die. 😐 Now my only constant text buddy is my boyfriend 😣🤍✨ can’t wait to make new friends though I outgrew a lot of people💀

  13. I always thought finstas are something only celebrities have, where they can hide from their main (business) account, and actually engage with other people's posts without every single one of their likes and follows being analized by the internet. Essentially just an anonymous private account.
I guess that's also what it is but I didn't consider casual instagram users would have a finsta as well. I did post things on instagram but I didn't "run" my account for validation or smth.
At some point I removed all my classmates from my follows and deleted all pictures except one, and just used it for following and engaging with other people's content.
Now I don't use it at all and only check every few weeks what funny memes my sister sent me over dms lol I don't miss it honestly.

Edit: I just realized that I made a tumblr account exactly for dumping my feelings that I didn't want anyone to know haha Bc on twitter and instagram I had ppl that I was friends with, but on tumblr no one knew me so I guess in a way, i did have a finsta just ya know, it was tumblr

  14. Maybe its too broad a topic but would love to see you make a video on fomo in general and how social media has essentially cultivated this fomo culture (I feel personally haha)

  15. Girl, you've done it again. So many parts of this video I feel like I've had the exact same thoughts before. I always find posting about emotional things on social media (whether it be private or not) somewhat awkward bc of the relationship of "liking" said emotional post and how that is supposed to replace a deeper connection. I had a friend post emotional depressing stuff on her finsta and I reached out to check in and she said something like "I'm actually not comfortable talking about it rn" … like ??!? what you said about how it's easier to just post to the internet than actually talk to a person but I found it weird even though I'm sure I can relate haha

  16. This is why I’ve stepped away from posting (or even just browsing) Instagram and TikTok. Instagram honestly made me nervous to be on for some reason, I’m still not sure why. It feels pretty good not to be wrapped up in those socials and constantly know what everyone else is up to.

  17. with my finsta it got to the point that i never rly told the ppl i was close with what was going on in my life, i would just say "check my finsta." that's when i knew i had to get ride of it lol

  18. I don't like how they added a feature that can tell other people if you have multiple accounts and how they don't have a setting to disable it. I don't want people to know that I have a different account and I had to delete an account because it was an trans community support account and I'm not out as trans to a lot of my friends or family.

  19. I have a finsta but it's honestly for my art/creative direction. Nothing more. I don't post anything on my main except for activism stuff.

  20. this was very interesting to listen to i live in a small town and me and all my friends have “finstas” which are actually referred to as “spams” now and those actually only have my close friends on them as well as my private story so i think since you didn’t exactly grow up with social media but it entered into your life at a different stage you responded differently to it than i did just a thought 🙂

  21. Instagram is amongst the worst social media apps for me. (I mean, they all are at this day and age). The whole need of having a finsta just proves my point that a lot of people put too much care in something as trivial as an instagram profile. Should I post this picture? Maybe tomorrow? Nah, it doesn't match the rest of my "aesthetic". Omg, x y and z unfollowed/followed me. Im sick of all of this. Like amanda said in the vid, its not about expression anymore but presentation. They'll put their instagram profile above their actual life. It's so shallow and narrow minded to care about things like this, but apparently thats how the internet (and world) is moving. Instagram (and other social media) in its early days WAS like finsta is now. Most users posted anything without worrying about which filter to apply or when to post it. It's sad that people feel so much pressure on what they should appear as online. Wanting to seem attractive, interesting, successful to people who don't even know you that well or care about you… is it worth it? I deactivated ig and it is very freeing.
