Also in 1983, an animated film produced by Ruby-Spears called Mister T premiered on NBC. The cartoon Mister T starred Mr. T as his alter ego, the owner of a gym where a group of gymnasts trained. In 2010, Mr. T. signed on as spokesman for Gold Promise, a gold purchasing company.[58] According to an appraiser hired by Taking Stockof Bloomberg Television, his trademark gold jewelry was worth approximately $43,000 in 1983,[59] although some sources claim the gold jewelry was worth as much as $300,000.[60 ]

Early life

Mr. T was born Laurence Tureaud in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest son in a family of twelve children. Tureaud grew up with his four sisters and seven brothers in a three-bedroom apartment at the Robert Taylor Homes.[8] His father, Nathaniel Tureaud, was a minister.[4] After his father left at the age of five, he shortened his name to Lawrence Tero. In 1970 he legally changed his surname to T.[5] His new name, Mr. T., was based on his childhood impressions of white people’s lack of respect for his family:

I remember that my father was called “boy”, my uncle was called “boy”, my brother came back from Vietnam and was called “boy”. So I asked myself, “What does a black man have to do before he’s respected as a man?” So by the time I was 18, when I was old enough to fight and die for my country, old enough to drink, old enough to vote, I was old enough to be called a man. I’ve proclaimed myself Mr. T, so the first word on everyone’s lips is “Mr.”[9]

Tureaud attended Dunbar Vocational High School[10] where he played football, wrestled and studied martial arts. During his time in Dunbar he became Citywe Wrestling Champion two years in a row. He won a football scholarship to Prairie View A&M University, where he majored in math, but was expelled after his freshman year.[11]

After leaving Prairie View A&M, Tureaud worked as a fitness instructor for a government program in Chicago. He later said he found a gift here in helping children.[5]

He then enlisted in the United States Army in 1975 and served in the Military Police Corps. After his release in the late 1970s, he tried his hand at the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League, but did not make the team due to a knee injury.[11]

Tureaud next worked as a bouncer at Rush Street Club Dingbats Discotheque.[12][13] At that time he created the personality of Mr. T.[14] His wearing of gold necklaces and other jewelry was the result of customers losing the items or leaving them behind after a fight at the nightclub. A banned customer, or one unwilling to risk a confrontation by going back inside, could return to claim their property from Mr. T, who conspicuously carries it just outside the door. In addition to controlling violence as a bouncer, Tureaud was hired primarily to keep out drug dealers and users. Tureaud claims he has been involved in over 200 fights as a bouncer and has been sued several times, but won every case.

He eventually turned his job as a bouncer into a career as a bodyguard that lasted almost ten years. As his reputation grew, he was hired to guard fashion designers, models, judges, politicians, athletes, and millionaires, among others. His clients have included celebrities such as Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, LeVar Burton, and Diana Ross, as well as boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Leon Spinks.[19] With his reputation as “Mr. T,” Tureaud attracted odd offers and was frequently approached with odd assignments, including tracking down runaway teenagers, finding missing persons, debt collection, and assassination proposals.

In his late twenties, Tureaud won two Hartmann competitions in a row. The first aired as “Sunday Games” on NBC-TV as part of the “America’s Toughest Bouncer” competition, which involved throwing a 150-pound stuntman and breaking through a four-inch wooden door. At the first event, Tureaud placed third. In the end, two finalists competed in a boxing ring for a two-minute bout to declare the champion.He made it in the ring as a finalist, facing a 280-pound (130 kg) bouncer from Honolulu named Tutefano Tufi. Within twenty seconds, “Mr. T” gave the 1.80 meter tall competitor a bloody nose and later a bloody mouth. He won the match and with it the competition. The second contest aired on NBC-TV under the new name Games People Play. When interviewed by Bryant Gumbel before the final boxing match, Mr. T.sa said: “I just feel sorry for the guy I have to box. I really feel sorry for him.” This fight was supposed to last three rounds, but Mr. T finished it in under 54 seconds. The line “I don’t hate him, but… I pity the fool” in the film Rocky III was written by Sylvester Stallone, who is said to have been inspired by the interview.[26]

Mr. T is a born again Christian.[65] Mr T. has three children; two daughters, one of whom is a comedian, and a son by his ex-wife.[66][67]

In 1987, he enraged resentment in Lake Forest, Illinois by planting more than a hundred oak trees on his estate fell. The local newspaper referred to the incident as the “Lake Forest Chain Saw Massacre.”[68][69][70]
