PHOTOGRAPHER Jim Goldberg has spent more than seven years investigating and sharing the lives of runaway and discarded children on the streets of Hollywood and San Francisco. The other is the narration of “Echo,” a 13-year-old runaway whom Dave professes to love and pursues, pathetically, pathologically, and unsuccessfully, for most of the story. The story is mostly told in Dave’s words which, like his life, are bleak, dirty and boring.

Eventually, Dave dies of liver disease and general masturbation. Only then does Goldberg discover that the boy had a twin sister and kind, loving adoptive parents who would do anything for him. The horrific scar was the result of surgery to correct birth defects. This resolution was meant to be dramatic, but it just feels like another cheap trick Dave did. He’s hard to mourn.

Echo, after years of prostitution and almost constant use of all kinds of drugs, finally gets her sanity and her two babies together and goes home to her mother, who is surely considered a saint for her tireless efforts to rescue her daughter, and her patient endurance of Echo’s disdain and deceit.

Goldberg himself deserves respect and sympathy for his kindhearted persistence in chronicling this ongoing waste of young people’s lives. He is almost superhumanly unprejudiced and empathetic. But by refusing to impose himself on his subjects, he misses his subject, neither artistically nor journalistically. Because his work resembles the photojournalism of a Mary Ellen Mark—and because the exhibition includes the trappings of a museum exhibit (videos, artifacts)—we can be forgiven for thinking that Goldberg created a work of fact. But he admits – he claims – that he knows little about the veracity of their stories, or how children ended up on the streets, or how to get them out of the difficult circumstances he’s worked in, not necessarily. His refusal to accept any responsibility for the truth of what he presents further diminishes his credibility and influence. By letting the children tell their own stories for the most part – which are generally incoherent, if not outright lies – Goldberg robs us of any useful insight that his decades of effort may have yielded.
