PHOTOGRAPHER Jim Goldberg has spent more than seven years investigating and sharing the lives of runaway and discarded children on the streets of Hollywood and San Francisco. He was often harassed by authorities, who suspected Goldberg of being one of the perverts exploiting Street Ks. Always in danger from the children themselves as they were accidentally tossed through a dingy and violent world of drugs, disease and desperation,” now on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. It includes around 170 objects ranging from still images and videos to graffiti, memorabilia, found objects and scrawled statements by the children themselves.

The show is, of course, inescapably sad. But unfortunately also unsatisfactory. Goldberg draws on the conventions but not the disciplines of documentary film, and he has the attitude but not the artist’s eye. The result is a potpourri of surreal scenes of real children that only superficially appeal to either the heart or the mind. Methodology – or lack thereof. “Raised by Wolves” is a fiction in a way,” Brookman said at an exhibition preview. “In a way it’s a made up story, not what we could say is an accurate representation of what Jim experienced. That becomes her reality.”

This is how we hear about “Tweeky Dave” , who was maybe 16 when Goldberg met him in Hollywood. “My mother was a 15-year-old junkie slut I’ve never met,” says Dave, in a sort of reproduction of his own handwriting. “My dude is a biker from hell. The damn hole shot me in the stomach when I was 12 years old. Haven’t gone home or had one since.” When even Dave lifts his shirt to reveal an ugly scar where his navel should have been. Police officers, social workers and so on. The other is the narration of “Echo,” a 13-year-old runaway whom Dave professes to love and pursues, pathetically, pathologically, and unsuccessfully, for most of the story. The story is mostly told in Dave’s words which, like his life, are bleak, dirty and boring.

Eventually, Dave dies of liver disease and general masturbation. Only then does Goldberg discover that the boy had a twin sister and kind, loving adoptive parents who would do anything for him. The horrific scar was the result of surgery to correct birth defects. This resolution was meant to be dramatic, but it just feels like another cheap trick Dave did. He’s hard to mourn.

Echo, after years of prostitution and almost constant use of all kinds of drugs, finally gets her sanity and her two babies together and goes home to her mother, who is surely considered a saint for her tireless efforts to rescue her daughter, and her patient endurance of Echo’s disdain and deceit.

Goldberg himself deserves respect and sympathy for his kindhearted persistence in chronicling this ongoing waste of young people’s lives. He is almost superhumanly unprejudiced and empathetic. But by refusing to impose himself on his subjects, he misses his subject, neither artistically nor journalistically. Because his work resembles the photojournalism of a Mary Ellen Mark—and because the exhibition includes the trappings of a museum exhibit (videos, artifacts)—we can be forgiven for thinking that Goldberg created a work of fact. But he admits – he claims – that he knows little about the veracity of their stories, or how children ended up on the streets, or how to get them out of the difficult circumstances he’s worked in, not necessarily. His refusal to accept any responsibility for the truth of what he presents further diminishes his credibility and influence. By letting the children tell their own stories for the most part – which are generally incoherent, if not outright lies – Goldberg robs us of any useful insight that his decades of effort may have yielded. Neither documentation nor art, the exhibition is almost as muddled as the lives of the children he shows us. RAISED BY WOLVES: Photos and Documents of Runaways by Jim Goldberg.
