Engel, 45, gave the news on Monday in Today Show and introduced viewers to baby Theodore Forrest Engel.
“Mary and I are very excited to introduce our new son, Theodore (Theo). ‘ he told Today in an email. “He’s healthy, happy (unless you unwrap his wrap) and thirsty. We couldn’t be more in love. And now Henry’s a big brother too.”
“Life has twists and turns and new beginnings,” added the proud new dad. “This is Theo’s first chapter and a new one for our family. We’re excited, nervous and grateful.”

Engel and Forrest are parents to 3-year-old son Henry, who was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder, in 2017 , which leads to severe physical and cognitive impairments and is still incurable.
Shortly after the birth, the couple noticed the first signs that something was wrong with their first son. Forrest had a normal pregnancy, but as a newborn, Henry had trouble gaining weight, breastfeeding, or sucking on a bottle. At 6 months his parents noticed he was missing milestones like sitting unaided or grasping objects.
When he wasn’t sitting, standing or walking at 18 months and hadn’t developed speech, angel and Forrest decided to turn to genetic testing. After an agonizing six-month wait, the results came. Mary, a stay-at-home mom since having Henry, previously told PEOPLE that the news felt “like someone punched me in the stomach.”
Shortly after his son’s diagnosis was made by Engel in connection with dr. Huda Zoghbi of Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, the pre-eminent Rett syndrome researcher who was the first to identify the gene that causes the disorder. Zoghbi has since dedicated her lab to studying the little boy, who has a unique variant of the condition.
Engel told PEOPLE last year that his wife’s determination made him strong.
“In In a way, sensually, I’m the happier one because I can step back from reporting trips. And because they’re dangerous sometimes, I really have to focus,” says the journalist, who travels frequently to war zones to cover and survived a violent attack in Syria in 2012 while covering the civil war there. “It forces my mind to do something else. For Mary, this is a 24/7 commitment.”

* 100036* For her part, Forrest says she doesn’t have time to feel sorry for herself.
“You can’t lie in bed all day. Henry is awake. He lies in bed giggling. he needs me You just have to keep doing it every day,” she says. “There are days when I feel depressed, but that’s my life. this is my child I gotta take care of him kid,” Forrest said. “But it would be a really wonderful thing for Henry.”
Last March, in a first-person essay, Engel revealed that Henry was calling him “Dada” for the first time, marking an important milestone.*100045 ** 100040*”For parents with normally developing children, a little Dada may not be a big deal,” he wrote. “But for me it was an appreciation, a confirmation that he’s in there, knows me, knows that his mother and I are forces for good in his life, and most of all that he loves us.”
