As he prepares for his role as Emperor Peter III. prepared by Russia on the TV show The Great, Nicholas Hoult wondered if he should go for the accent. The pressure on Grant didn’t go away on Hoult, even at 11, not least because he felt self-serving. He was aware of the stereotype of the child actor who burned out before puberty and that, unlike, say, young musicians or sports stars, his early success as an actor was a potentially irreversibly damaging experience. “Maybe it’s because the failures in terms of child actors are more public and everyone knows about the horror stories. Growing up, it was difficult for me to have people say, “Oh, you’re a child actor, you know what that could possibly do to you?” It scares you a little. It forcefully heralded Hoult as a serious artist, introduced him to “a different tone, a different audience” and was more than able to hold the screen across from Firth. Hoult joined the franchise in 2011 and has appeared in four of the films. “It’s different,” says Hoult. “It depends on what the point of view of having fun is. I can have fun playing a ridiculous character in an enlarged form in a costume drama that isn’t faithful to the real story, and bizarre as it is in many ways, that puts you in a very fun zone.
