Both have also served W&M with distinction, and both have risen to the college’s highest leadership role – Rector of the Board of Visitors.

It began on a muggy day in August 1981.

An 18 year old Michael Powell had just arrived on campus and was outside of his new home on the third floor of Yates Hall. Powell had driven from Washington, D.C. to Williamsburg in his powder-blue Ford Pinto. With him was a large suitcase that his mother insisted he take to college – a kind big enough to “hold at least two bodies in it”.

“I pulled up at Yates’ without even being able to move into my room,” Powell says, recalling the first time he approached his freshman roommate, Todd Stottlemyer. “My first impression was, ‘Boy, he’s tall. He’s definitely the guy who’s gonna carry that suitcase up the stairs.'”

Stottlemyer, a freshman offensive lineman for the Tribe Football Team, had arrived for training camp two weeks earlier. He was happy about two things: two exercises a day were over and he finally met the person who would be living just a few feet away from him for the next nine months.

“[Yates Hall] is where it all began,” says Stottlemyer, adding that the two wrote letters over the summer, “the Facebook of the day.” “[Michael] is a great letter writer. We also spoke on the phone that summer, so I felt like I knew him a bit before we showed up. I was just super excited to meet my roommate and excited to start college. We understood each other very, very quickly.”

Powell ’85 and Stottlemyer ’85 developed a close friendship and a deep bond with William & Mary that remains strong to this day. Both have served W&M with distinction and have risen to the highest leadership role in the college – as rector or chair of the Board of Visitors.

A First for William & Mary

While the college archives have no official record on the matter, it is believed that Powell and Stottlemyer are the first pair of new housemates, both of whom go on to serve as principals.

Powell and Stottlemyer admit they didn’t know much about rectors or the work of the Board of Visitors when they were students. Both say they never thought they would serve the college in this leadership role. But even as freshmen, they know that W&M is something special.

“I think we soon knew we loved this place,” says Powell. “That love is tied early on this college campus. It’s not too hard to imagine that later in life you’ll do your best to get back there.”

Stottlemyer added: “I think my experience here stems from those formative years. It has been a great privilege to be here at William & Mary for four years and to be a part of the incredible history of this university to be sitting here today and speaking about our respective roles as principal. In 200 years someone will be in that position and they will be talking about history and we will be part of that history.”

It’s not hard to imagine that Powell and Stottlemyer will be firmly entrenched in the William & Mary history books. Professionally, both are among the best-known and most successful alumni of the university. Powell is the past Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and current present of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. Stottlemyer, a successful and well-respected CEO in the technology sector, is the current Chairman of Acentia, a management and technology company with more than 1,000 employees. The Washington Business Journal recently included Stottlemyer in its “Power 100” list, which ranks the most influential business leaders in the region.

Both are also among the most committed leaders in the college community. Powell served on the Board of Visitors from 2001 to 2009, including three years as principal. Stottlemyer was appointed to the board in 2011 and elected rector last April.

The two men attended rival high schools in Northern Virginia. Powell was at Lake Braddock and Stottlemyer in West Springfield. However, the two did not know each other when they were in school. Powell laughs as he recalls his first thoughts of living with a football player.

“I’m like, ‘I have a soccer player as a roommate – what’s that going to be like?'” he said. “Of course you come in with a cliché. Todd smashed it very quickly and I realized he was an amazing guy.”

Stottlemyer sa The two teenagers, both government majors, quickly discovered that they had a lot in common.

“Mike was also an athlete and was a ROTC in the Army and very interested in public policy,” he says. “Even as freshmen we had some funny conversations about politics and the world.”

Both were later initiated into prestigious honor societies at William & Mary – Stottlemyer in Phi Beta Kappa and Powell in Omicron Delta Kappa.

The third roommate

During the 1981-82 academic year, Room 337 at Yates Hall was pretty bare. There was a refrigerator, a stereo, two beds and two dressers. The walls were bare as well. Powell says he’s not a poster guy, and Stottlemyer joked that “Sam Sadler (longtime VP of student affairs) would have fined us $10 if we put anything on the walls that was peeling off the paint.”

Both agree that Powell, the ROTC cadet, was the neater of the two. “That was me, the guy who had the iron,” he joked. “The football culture was different.”

They also had a third roommate. Powell’s wife, Jane Knott Powell, lived next door. The two met early in the school year and became inseparable.

“Todd owes both an apology and gratitude for his never-ending acceptance of this little girl who keeps coming into my room and keeps stealing from our fridge,” Powell joked. “Todd was always a great sport and Jane was also a good friend and a fan of Todd’s.”

From rector to rector

Today, the two men stay in touch, despite a busy life with work and family. They live near each other in the Washington, D.C. area. When Stottlemyer was elected rector, one of his first calls was Powell.

“We had a very, very long lunch and I had probably a hundred questions,” says Stottlemyer.

Stottlemyer says he’s followed Powell’s tenure very closely, both as a friend and as an alumnus.

“The time he was principal was one of the most difficult times for the university because of the current transition,” says Stottlemyer, referring to the retirement of former current Gene Nichol in 2008 after a short but tumultuous stint as currently at college. “I watched from a distance and just seeing Michael handle the situation with such incredible leadership and grace was truly amazing.”

Powell says he warned Stottlemyer that being a principal is not a part-time job.

“We can be romantic about college, but it’s a really living, breathing institution that needs to be fed and clothed, housed and watered,” says Powell.”I’ve learned as a principal that that’s an amazing challenge, especially given the kind of resource constraints we have. It takes a serious person with strong organizational leadership skills to handle these reins. Todd has proven that in numerous positions. I really think the school is in fantastic hands.”

A love for W&M

Both say their love for William & Mary has only grown with time.

Powell says that when he and Jane return to campus, they feel right at home. It tells the story of William & Mary’s campus and buildings and serves as their anchor in a world full of flu.

“What’s not to love? William & Mary manages to combine everything that was worthy of the past with that excitement and enthusiasm for the future,” he says.

Both recognize the work of the faculty in preparing them for the future.

“I chose government (as a major) because I really felt like I wanted to be a civil servant,” says Powell. “All the professors made time for you personally. I’ve held government positions several times and some of what I’ve learned here has always come back to me.”

Stottlemyer keeps in touch with his government professors such as Joel Schwartz and John McGlennon, the current chair of the department.

“They really got you thinking and that was probably the most important thing,” he says. “You’ve broadened your horizons. How do you solve problems? How do you deal with big problems? And of course, one of the great things about William & Mary is that you can take courses in other areas. It was a great experience.”

In addition to serving as principal and board member, Stottlemyer visits campus as a parent. His daughter Caroline is a sophomore in college. Stottlemyer and his wife, Elaine, often visit campus in official and unofficial capacities. The more time he spends with students, the more excited he is about the future of William & Mary.

“You see the future. you see hope You see optimism and only the exceptional students,” he says. “They are passionate about their ability to change the world in their own way.

“To think that you were a small part of it as a student and continue to be a part of it as you see the next generation enjoying this special experience we had while we were on campus. William & Mary is timeless.”

Like at university

Powell and Stottlemyer were roommates for just a year. They stayed in touch throughout their college years, but both developed new friends and interests. Their friendship rekindled after graduation and there are many common ties to their lives at W&M and off campus. Both are Georgetown Law graduates and both live in the D.C. area. Both have busy work schedules and regular family commitments that come with being fathers and husbands.

The principals are doing their best to keep in touch.

When they get together, Stottlemyer says, “It’s like we’re back in college.”
