The first song on the album, “Hang in There Girl,” is a nice introduction to the McBryde line-up of misfits and hellraisers who take the stage on “Never Will.” In it, McBryde offers hope to a 15-year-old who lives in a trailer and who wants the hell out of there. When the time comes, she demands “Check the oil and antifreeze and get started.”

Just because you take the first chance to run doesn’t mean that everything will go smoothly. “Sparrow” describes the consequences of sacrificing the things you love in order to achieve the dream you think you love more. The couple at the heart of Velvet Red also risks a love affair between “the mayor’s eldest daughter” and “a poor boy down in that howler,” but both the story and the Patty Loveless harmonies foretell a doomed future .

The highlight of the album is “Stone”. It touches on all the subtle ways someone can affect our lives before they leave us. Death doesn’t easily fit into a box we might prefer, so it’s fitting that the melancholic pain of “Stone” is found alongside the bubbling rage of “Shut Up Sheila,” a song about dealing with a curious outsider during a grandmother’s dying days. Death could bring out our rebellious selves or inspire us to look back on the lessons – and disappointments – left by our lost loved ones.

Other songs on the album simply acknowledge the occasional happy mess that occurs when we make bad decisions. Martha Divine is the story of an unfaithful husband’s daughter who sets out to kill his lover to avenge her mother’s honor. In “One-Night Standards,” the singer just wants a little company for the night, without unnecessary complications. “The First Thing I Reach For” is a quick enumeration of things the singer finds equally terrifying and irresistible: brown liquor in coffee, cigarettes, and “another night of bad decisions, there’s another one in my bed.” The album ends with “Styrofoam,” in which that brown liquor returns as the narrator shoves some of it in with her Diet Coke before “walking down Main Street…right under the nose of the fuzz.”

In each of these songs, the narrator is fully aware of her bad choices, makes no excuses for them, but also doesn’t let those bad choices rule her life.

Ultimately, this album’s message is this: every day doesn’t have to be a fray night party, and that’s okay. Some days it’s a funeral. Other days, you’ll cling to your brown liquor in your 44-ounce mug after an ill-advised one-night stand. Some days you have to tell Sheila to go to hell.

Whatever the messy reason you’re skipping that fray night party, Never Will offers rest, sun and comfort.
