Not to be confused with hypochondria

In anatomy, the division of the abdomen into regions may use a nine-region scheme. The hypochondrion refers to the two hypochondriac regions in the upper third of the abdomen; the left hypochondrium and the right hypochondrium.[1] They are each located at the lateral ends of the abdominal wall below (below) the rib cage and are separated by the epigastrium. [1] [2]

The liver is located in the right hypochondrium, extends through the epigastrium and reaches the left hypochondrium. The spleen and part of the stomach are located in the left hypochondrium.[3]

Definitions, Etymology, and Modern Controversies

The word derives from the Greek word υποχόνδριο (“hypochondrion”). This Greek word literally means “beneath the cartilage,” referring to the costal cartilages. In other words, the word refers to the area of the ventral trunk that is below the costal cartilages.[4] The word used to refer only to the soft part of the abdomen between the rib cage and the navel (the region once thought to be the seat of hypochondria), but it is not used in the schemas of modern anatomy for the regions of the abdomen used like that. [5]

Some sources have disputed the use of the term for the portions of the anterior abdominal wall below the costal margins. The region called the right hypochondrium is present anatomically, but is almost entirely under the chest wall. In clinical situations, the portions of the abdominal wall just below the right and left costal margins are referred to as the right and left hypochondriacal regions, respectively.[6]
