“He always says that John is a kind and lovely person because he takes the time to talk to him and sign his album. John was a nice person, but Mark didn’t think about things and put himself first.

“Mark would say, ‘I’m sorry for causing this pain. I hope you forgive me. I don’t know how people can go through such hard things.”

“I haven’t gone through anything very difficult. If I hadn’t had Jesus in my life [when Mark killed John] I probably would have done something to myself or gone insane. I’m doing very well, I’m working and I’m busy.I love life.”

The singer had just returned to his home in New York City with his wife Yoko Ono from a busy day that included a photo shoot for Rolling Stone magazine, a radio interview and several hours in the studio.

Chapman had been hanging around in front of the Dakota building all day.

As Lennon pulled into the building from his limousine at 10:50 p.m., Chapman shot him twice in the back and twice in the shoulder.

“I draw the gun and I’ll throw out all five bullets,” he told the jury. “She had never seen a gun before. My god, I still hold a deep grudge that she didn’t go to anyone, not even the police, and say, “Look, my husband bought a gun and says he’s going to shoot John Lennon.”* 100118*

Gloria recalls a slightly different exchange today.

“I know I’ve been accused of , yes,” she admits. “I do not know what to do. He totally convinced me he got rid of the gun. But I was totally fooled, so I don’t feel guilty. I can’t live with that kind of regret. I have to keep going, otherwise I could get sick.”

When she heard about the murder, she was “totally shocked”, she says.

But she is bitterly convinced of her husband and feels sorry for him Murder. “He’s terribly sorry, but he’s making the most of his fame to tell people about the Lord.

“Mark’s eyes weren’t on Jesus [that day], they were on Him. He wanted to be someone, but was a nobody. It’s really sad that he decided to worship himself.

“We were given a plaque with the Ten Commandments on it as a wedding present and Mark saw it every day at our house. He saw: “Thou shalt not kill.He says that one commandment kept leaping out at him, but he chose not to obey. 100153*

‘But he takes full responsibility and knows what he did wrong. He had mental problems, spiritual struggles. But he could have said, “No, I don’t.”‘

When Chapman told her in the winter of 1980 that he made frequent trips to New York from her home in Hawaii because he was working on a children’s book, Gloria insists that she believed him.

Right after the murder, on December 8, 1980 – just hours after Lennon gleefully signed an album cover for Chapman – Friends and family urged her to sever all contact with her husband.

“I would divorce him. My friends wanted me to do it. I was upset because I still loved him. But I know that God hates divorce, so I’ve decided not to do it. That was my answer and divorce was not an issue. Forget me and get on with your life.” But 35 years later we love each other more than ever.

Ever since she decided to stand by Chapman, she insists she never regretted her decision. Visibly annoyed at any suggestion that she should have avoided the killer, she barks, “No. We have ups and downs, but we keep at it. Mark knows how happy he is that I stood by him.”

Prison, she emphasizes, wasn’t hard on her husband. Though the couple speaks frequently on the phone, she says she lives for their annual visit.

“Unfortunately, my close friends don’t come by. They don’t know how to react. Mark also had close friends in high school and it took him a while to forgive them for not being supportive. But I understand that people don’t know what to do or say.

“But my family has always been loving. They’re just a “shame”. They are very supportive.”

Both Gloria and Chapman regret not having children.

‘From an early age we wanted children. But I’m 63 now, so that would be kind of a miracle. I don’t pray for children now, but early on I d. And Mark loves children. We’re both very childish ourselves.

“The last time I visited there was a six week old baby and Mark couldn’t take his eyes off her. If he were outside, it would certainly be different. We would have a baby, a dog and a cat.”

Although Chapman is unlikely to ever be released, his wife still believes he was given a second chance at life.

*100170 *“In another way, after turning his back on Jesus, he was given a second chance with the Lord. This is how he got his second chance, now that he is close to Jesus again.

“I only hope that the world can open their hearts to Jesus and forgiveness. This keeps Mark positive and happy. He has truly found peace.’

Gloria says Sir Paul McCartney ‘gets on well’ with Chapman and urges him to visit the prison.

Gloria spoke in the three hours she spent, in a meandering mode with The Mail on Sunday and MailOnline. Picky about her food, she ordered a bowl of hot and sour soup, which she ate slowly, examining the contents.

Before eating, she insisted that everyone present pray with her as she prays to God for the food thanked her – despite what she called “unusual circumstances” in which she found herself.

Shy though, she wasn’t afraid to refuse to answer – or ignore – questions she didn’t like. She refused to discuss Mark’s obsession with JD Salinger’s book The Catcher In The Rye, the book her husband read in the minutes after he gunned Lennon and continued reading while he quietly awaited the release of the police arrest.

And she repeatedly refused to explain how someone so apparently rational, if a little eccentric, could justify assisting a murderer. Instead, she just waved her hand and said politely, “Thank you.”

Financially, she’s most likely not doing well. She was keen to take the leftovers of the meal home for her dinner that night. And later that evening she appeared to be dreading the work, explaining that inspectors were touring her department. She seemed scared of losing her job.

Though Chapman remains one of America’s most hated criminals, she says her husband is in Wende, or Attica Prison in Texas, where he was originally who was held after his sentencing, was never attacked.

“As far as I know, it didn’t happen,” she said cautiously. “But maybe Mark is trying to protect me and wouldn’t want to say that to me.” She insisted he was “popular” with fellow inmates but is careful about who he associates with.

She agreed admitted that the murder had strangely brought them closer together, and admitted there had been times when Chapman had refused to see her.

“There was a time when I didn’t see him for three years,” she says. “He just said he didn’t want me to visit him. Other times my finances weren’t so good so we just wrote letters to each other.

“But I’d go out and buy a heavy coat and boots if he changed his mind because I knew it was in.” New York would be cold.”

Though they both don’t really admit to believing Chapman could get out of prison, there remains a glimmer of hope. At least for her husband.

“I believe in miracles,” she says, “and it would be great. We try not to spend too much time talking about such things. But Mark wants to go for a walk on the beach in Kailua, Hawaii again. He proposed to me there, which is very nice.”

The highlight of her week, she says, are her two phone calls with her husband, during which they recite prayers.

“Mark knows he’s infamous,” she accepts. “All he can do now is use that to bring more people to the Lord. So now he can take advantage of his shame.”

Being known to many as the man responsible for “the day the music died” was difficult for Chapman, she says.*100207 *

“He doesn’t like to hear that. No, he’s not happy about that. Not at all.”

AFTER 34 YEARS IN PRISON, CHAPMAN’S SELF-VOCING TESTIMONY TO MURDER IS REVEALED..

In prison, Chapman’s dog fat is gone, but the arrogance with which he stares at the camera remains unperturbed

While at the Attica Correctional Facility in Texas in 1994, Mark Chapman wrote a concise and repentant testimony about the murder a b in order to convert other inmates to Christianity.*100217 *

First revealed by his wife Gloria, it offers a rare glimpse into his troubled state of mind at the time, revealing that while he wasn’t drug addicted, he had become a true psychopath.

He also reveals his first words after the murder, voicing for the first time his belief that he was a coward for shooting Lennon in the back. Here are those words in full:

“Across the street, the long white sedan had turned around and stopped in front of the Dakota. John Lennon got out, carrying cassettes from the last recording session he and Yoko Ono, his wife, had just returned from.They had planned to go to a restaurant but changed their mind July 2010 he looks different again after growing his hair out

“Now they came up the sidewalk… and I was ready. John passed me. I think he recognized me as the man who had approached him earlier and asked for an autograph. He was very patient with me.

“Well, as he walked towards the door of the security office, I pulled a .38 special revolver from my pocket and fired it at his back. I was such a coward. He stumbled into the office. Yoko just behind.

“As John Lennon lay dying, the bouncer came up to me, grabbed my wrist and shook the gun out of my hand. As it fell to the pavement, he kicked it across the driveway and told me to leave. I turned to him and said, “But where would I go?”

“Simply put, the John Lennon’s death was nobody’s fault but my own. I wasn’t on drugs; I wasn’t the crazy fan that some people tried to label me to understand. Given an opportunity to become what I thought was a “someone” – however wrong or perverted – I decided to end a man’s life , whom I didn’t even know. I had become a true psychopath; I did so coldly and with no thought for others.

“Today I am not the same Mark Dav Chapman. I’m not perfect, but I’m close to the Lord now. I now understand why I did what I did and the heartache it caused. What I experienced was horrible, something I will never be forgiven – except maybe by God.

“I feel like I understood His forgiveness in my own life. I think he loves me for his own reasons and I accept them. I deeply regret taking this man’s life.

“When the bouncer asked me to leave the building, I remembered asking, ‘But where should I go?'”*100239 *

“I know now. I have the Lord Jesus Christ. He’s everything I need here, in prison, in life, in everything. If only I had turned to Him then. He is the only friend who will never leave you or let you down. I know.

‘He will FORGIVE you. I know.”
