Final Audio Heaven IV Review

Usually, when MajorHifi catches the attention of a high-end audio company, we’re flooded with expensive headphones to review. And while it’s fun to play around with these high-tech gizmos, there’s still a wealth of inexpensive and very good headphones out there. Case in point: Final Audio’s Heaven IV, a stainless steel earphone retailing for $169.

Final Audio Heaven IV Review

The Heaven IV comes in a swanky clamshell case that I first mistook for a hip flask. A small, spring-loaded clasp opens the case to reveal the earphones. Inside the box, you’ll also come across some eartips.

Utilizing a stainless steel housing, the earpieces remain lightweight while still imparting an air of durability. Rest assured, these are not the kind of earphones to fall apart on you.

The flat 4 ft (1.2 m) cable won’t tangle, and the cable ends in a right-angle 3.5mm plug.

Comfort is superb with the Heaven IV. Once you’ve found the right eartip to fit your ear, you could wear these for hours on end without suffering fatigue.

The Heaven IV is available in black, white, and violet color schemes.

Specs

Frequency Range: NA

Impedance: 16 ohms

Sound Pressure Level (SPL): 112 dB

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD): NA

As usual, Final Audio doesn’t offer specs for Frequency Range or Total Harmonic Distortion. However, I’d guess the former to be 12-20,000 Hz and the latter to be <0.2%. While there’s plenty of detail across the spectrum, the high end does seem to be missing something. However, these babies still remain refreshing clean. A low impedance of just 16 ohms will compliment any portable listening device, like an smartphone or an mp3 player. Likewise, volume will be more than adequate, even with low-output devices. Low End The low end of the Heaven IV hosts plenty of detail and a strong sense of control – you won’t hear any bleed here, but you might notice a fairly understated bass. While nowhere near as driving or as bombastic as the bass on some other earphones, the sound is accurate and lifelike, just a bit more refined. Mids With a fairly accurate and detailed sound, the Heaven IV displays just a shade of distortion in the upper mids. However, this is perhaps the only shortcoming in this part of the frequency range. By and large, the sound remains analytical enough for most critical listening. High End Despite missing some very-high high-notes, the sound here still strikes me as impressive. Never bordering on piercing or uncomfortable, the slightly-relaxed high end delivers plenty of detail and a rich listening experience without going overboard. Soundstage Good depth and good placement offer a decent sense of soundstage. Sure, the Heaven IV is no open-back over-ear headphone. But, even with its in-ear design, it still oozes a realistic sound that does justice to the wealth of detail present in the frequency range. Other Observations Even an hour after popping the Heaven IV into my ear, I still can’t feel a thing. The relaxed lows and mids lead to a very mid-centric sound. For fans of vocal heavy music, this earphone is a godsend. Still, it offers enough detail to still handle most genres with ease. Recommendations If you need an earphone with tons of bass or more high-end detail, you could opt for the Audio Technica ATH-CKR90iS. Offering a more dynamic sound, this earphone may lack the mid-heavy chops that we’ve seen in the Heaven IV. Of course, for critical listeners or anyone needing a richer midrange, there is simply no alternative to the Heaven IV. Usually, though, you have to spend twice as much to get such succinct and accurate mids. Personally, I prefer a sound with more emphasis on balance than dynamic sound. Following that recipe, the Heaven IV is the most affordable earphone I’ve ever auditioned. Final Analysis At $169, the Final Audio Heaven IV earphone may not seem that impressive. However, a short listening session will soon reveal a rich and detailed midrange complimented by a realistic sense of soundstage. For critical listening needs on a budget, the Heaven IV is nothing short of nirvana. Final Audio Design FI-BA-SA Heaven C Review

Added Aug 2012

Details: Latest addition to FAD’s BA line; replaces the outgoing BA-A1

MSRP: est. $299 (manufacturer’s page) (discontinued)

Current Price: $249 from musicaacoustics.com (discontinued)

Specs: Driver: BA | Imp: 16Ω | Sens: 112 dB | Freq: N/A | Cable: 4.6′ L-plug

Nozzle Size: 4.5mm | Preferred tips: MEElec M6 bi-flanges

Wear Style: Straight down or over-the-ear

Accessories (3.5/5) – Single-flange silicone tips (3 sizes) and oversize zippered carrying case

Build Quality (4/5) – The Final Audio FI-BA-SA is very similar in construction to the BA-SB model with more lightweight chromed shells and thinner cabling more akin to that of the $1100 FI-BA-SS. The cable is very soft and smooth but thinner than average and more tangle-prone compared to the flat cable of the BA-SB. Strain relief is still minimal but a cable cinch is present

Isolation (3.5/5) – Good with the stock single-flanges and even better with aftermarket tips

Microphonics (4.5/5) – Though thin, the cable is nearly silent even in the cord-down configuration

Comfort (4.5/5) – The housings of the BA-SA are much lighter than those of the BA-SB. The cabling is more flexible and comes complete with a cinch to make over-the-ear wear easier. On the whole, their featherlike weight pushes these FADs into don-and-forget territory

Sound (9/10) – The sound of FI-BA-SA is quite similar to that of its brass FI-BA-SB sibling and virtually identical to the now-defunct FI-BA-A1. Overall, its signature is a touch less colored than that of the BA-SB but mostly falls in the same vein. Compared to the SB model, the BA-SA has slightly more linear bass – there is still more mid-bass than a VSonic GR01 or Ety ER4 might have but the difference is just great enough to give the SA a slight advantage in definition over the SB. The SA also remains flatter through the lower mids for a slightly more neutral tone and less fullness, though it retains the forward presentation and overall clarity of the BA-SB.

The top end of the SA is again not overly prominent, taking a small step back compared to the bass and midrange. It is clear and resolving but gives up a touch of the brightness and energy of the SB model. The result is a marginally smoother and more restrained sound that loses some the crispness and excitement of the SB. It does, however, make gains in smoothness, keeping up with the VSonic GR01 even on poorly mastered recordings.

The soundstage of the BA-SA remains unchanged – it is below average in width and tends towards forwardness and intimacy. Depth is decent enough and dynamics are good but the SA will still sound congested compared to a HiFiMan RE272 or Sony MDR-7550. The SA also retains extremely high sensitivity – clearly there is no question that these were designed to be used with portable players.

Value (8/10) – The Final Audio Design FI-BA-SA is a slightly more conservative version of the FI-BA-SB, both in sound and appearance. Physical differences include lighter housings and thinner cables, giving the SA a slightly less solid feel but better long-term comfort and lower microphonics. The sound, too, is potentially less polarizing than that of the SB model, but also less lively and interesting. Technically, the SA may be the more accurate earphone but simply I couldn’t help reaching for the warmer, punchier, and more exotic FI-BA-SB most of the time.

Pros: Extremely lightweight construction, low microphonics, competent sound

Cons: Minimal strain relief, stringy cables, weighty housings

Heaven IV vs Heaven VI

Final Audio Design Heaven VI Vs Heaven IV – PREFACE

The heaven line from Final audio covers those with a balanced armature setup and comes in 3 different iterations all of which share the same basic external design. There is no doubt amongst the portable audio community that Final Audio Design makes both look and sound beautiful. Recently we reviewed the FI-BA-SS and Adagio III and next week hope to bring you a very special review of the Pandora Hope VI, FADS first line of full-size headphones. Today though we take a look at Heaven IV and Heaven VI-CC. These earphones satiate 2 separate price points in the heaven line up but both offer something unique.

Packaging (8/10)

The Heaven IV comes in with a fairly standard cardboard box displaying nice graphics and some information on the earphones in Japanese. What’s really impressive though is when you open that box. There are no earphones presented here instead you are faced with the most beautiful chrome carry case ever seen included in a set of earphones. Simply stunning.

Final Audio Design Heaven VI-CC (9/10)

The Heaven VI contains a faux crocodile box which is nice and similar to that used on the FI-BA-SS and also comes inside that beautiful carry case. Hats off to Final Audio for really knowing how to make a product feel very special.

Accessories – (9/10)

Both Earphones come with the same set of accessories, namely that simply stunning carry case which is chromed stainless steel on the outside whilst being padded inside. There is also a clip on the inside of the case which helps to keep the IEM from moving about. A few size tips are also included and are of excellent quality.

Looks and Build Quality – (9/10)

Build quality is excellent and the earphones are both lookers. The IV comes in a chrome stainless steel finished housing with purple cable and tips (also available in white) whereas the VI-CC comes in with a chrome copper housing and a brown cable and tips. The Chrome copper version is actually designed to age and look even more unique with age. They look absolutely identical apart from the different color schemes. Both have a flat cable, which performed with aplomb, barrel-designed housing, and look classy and refined all the while displaying the Final logo on the side. Overall they are built to a very high standard and there is very little one could criticize with regards to build quality.

Isolation (8.0/10)

Being that the earphones are of the same build they isolate to the same levels. The tips provide a good seal and insertion depth can be quite deep given the barrel housing is longer than the usual length and smaller than the usual diameter. They perform well in both public and computing environments and can be considered good isolators for universal earphones.

Fit (8/10)

The fit is again very good the tips provided with each pair are brilliant quality and none of us found any issue getting a good tight seal in seconds. The flat cable also performed well not holding any strange shapes and being low on microphonics when worn cable down. Sound Quality

Final Audio Design Heaven IV (9/10)

The Heaven IV is meant to satisfy those that like a concert hall sound but in reality, it performs well with a host of genres. The speed of the balanced armature along with the BAM technology combines well making the presentation open and with a great level of separation. It has a lot more weight in the low section than most of the normal BA offerings, it’s a sign that you would expect with a multi-driver setup.

Highs – Highs are crisp and clean but it’s not an overly bright earphone and good amounts of details are retrieved which is to be expected from the BA driver.

Mids – The midrange is brilliant with vocals and guitars sounding especially nice. Female vocals are magnificent and the IV even manages to handle Asian female vocalists and their slightly peaky upper mids. Guitar strings sound clean and resonate well and violins come across beautifully especially when you are listening to them in an ensemble.

Lows – Even though midrange is the star of the show it’s hard not to notice that the bass is tight, clear, and very controlled. It doesn’t have the ability to go low with a massive amount of rumble but even so, it is much more capable than any other single BA that I have heard at this price point.

Overall the sound of the Heaven IV is extremely enjoyable, One that you could happily listen to every day and it looks very hard to beat in the sub £200 category. That is just for the sound alone but when you take into account the build quality, style, and the carry case this actually becomes the real value for money.

Final Audio Design Heaven VI-CC (9.5)

We have established that the heaven 4 is excellent but now we have the VI, and it’s quite the price jump to get there. The VI-CC can be considered a nice refinement over the IV in almost every single way, it’s a lot of money for refinement but if you are trying to squeeze every last drop out then you won’t mind the increase. The soundstage appears slightly wider, the bass is somewhat fuller and the detail retrieval is also slightly higher than that of the IV. Directly AB testing them they have very similar properties but the VI is noticeably better all around. At a time when multi BA’s and Hybrids are all the rage, Mr. Takai and Final manage to show just how much performance can be dragged out of a single driver.

Highs – Super smooth and super detailed. The highs have all the same characteristics as the Heaven IV but are presented in a more laid-back and smooth manner. This combined with the airy soundstage makes the treble decay a little longer than usual which is nice. If you compare them with the FI-BA-SS I would say I actually prefer the VI in this frequency as it’s a touch less hot.

Mids – Some of the best minds that have ever come out with earphones at any price. These are seriously good performers offering up lots of separation and detail whilst very accurately presenting the midrange with a hint of warmth, just as if you were sitting at an intimate showing. The vocals are stunning and without a doubt the best part of the earphone the first thing I noticed when playing back Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chilli Peppers was that I had never heard Anthony Keidis sound so good…… and then the weeping guitar solo….. the tuning of these earphones is just magnificent.

Lows – It goes lower than the IV but not with quite the amount of rumble found in the FI-BA-SS. They also sit almost perfectly in line with the other frequencies. Good speed and great bass detail help them to sound just about as close to perfect for my taste.

Overall the sound of the VI is very very nice. It certainly puts it amongst the top performers in single BA territory with the only other competition I can think of is its sibling the FI-BA-SS. The signature is one that works well with almost every genre and despite the technical brilliance of the FI-BA-SS, I think I would probably take the VI as it is a more versatile sound signature to use on a wider range of music. The FI-BA-SS has the bigger soundstage of the 2 but the VI comes with very realistic and liquid vocals and with an overall smoother presentation.

CONCLUSION

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of having 5 different Final Audio Design earphones to listen to and the one thing I can say for sure is that each one is tuned to perform a specific purpose. For bassheads there’s the Adagio III. For great value, incredible sub £200 sound, beautiful style build, and accessories there is the Heaven IV. Finally for those who have very little desire to compromise and want to wring every last ounce of performance out of the Final Audio balanced armature IEM’s then there is the VI and the FI-BA-SS. Choosing between the latter 2 options is a much harder proposition. The VI is the smoother of the 2 and the FI-BA-SS is a bit more V-shaped with a hotter treble and a bigger soundstage but both are brilliant performers in their own regard. Whatever Final Audio you decide to go for you can be safe in the knowledge that you really going to be enjoying your music.
