Homice Hunter star Joe Kenda is as spectacular and understated in real life as he is on TV. After the entire crime series was told without a script, it’s no wonder the producers insisted on airing his dramatic reenactment of cases for six seasons.

While fans praise Kenda for directing the American crime series, citizens salute the veteran police officer for solving 356 of the 387 home improvement cases (representing a 92% overall close rate) and for his reputation as one of the most successful haunted crime fighters in history.

Kenda not only achieved impressive results in his 23 years with the Colorado Spring Police Department, but with Discovery Chanel’s #1 hit crime series, he surpassed a show rating of 8.8 out of 10 from IMDb and became a top performer in viewer rating, the Investigation Discovery network.

Joe Kenda on “Homice Hunter”

Though the series has come to an end, it’s safe to say that this won’t be the last we’ll hear from the no-nonsense detective.

Fate changes for Joe Kenda

Luckily for Kenda, an encounter with a man while he was a police officer left such a lasting impression that television producer Bryant approached Kenda about a series about his career.

It took some time for Kenda, who apparently wasn’t the TV guy, to agree with the company.

The Colorado Springs native began his television career in 2011 on the Investigation Discovery Network show Homice Hunter, which previewed some of the most gripping cases of its six seasons and came to a laudable ending in 2019.

Great man and a great show, but what about the scar on his nose?

Much like Owen Wilson’s snoop or Seal’s face, Kenda’s nose has been the subject of speculation for years. It appears that Lt. Joe Kenda and his wife Kathy have fun letting the world guess why the wild lieutenant has a scar on his nose.

The two of them didn’t openly address the million dollar question, and we don’t think anyone would have the nerve to ask the no-nonsense detective straight to the face what happened to his nose.

Because he didn’t say anything, his fans had countless thoughts about what could have happened.

Who speculates that the scars on Kenda’s nose were caused by either skin cancer or a punch in the face. However, the ideas of the fans are more interesting.

In a Facebook post and Reddit thread, viewers mentioned that the scar was probably from a dog bite when he was younger, or that a drug dealer hit him with a ring when he accepted a drug arrest.

A viewer also once tried to hide during a mission and decided to get a nose piercing for seamless role play. Unfortunately for Kenda, the nose job went awry and he ended up with a botched nose.

Kenda’s TV audience was so curious about his nose, some even went so far as to watch the entire series to see if anyone had attacked him.

For someone on the clean side of crime, we think Joe Kenda can certainly make his mark.

How it all began for Kenda

The story of how Joe Kenda was molded into a detective by Homice Hunter is quite mind-blowing staring at the screen. In an interview, the ice-cold lieutenant recalled being fascinated with murder when he was nine. Even for a man like Joe Kenda, that’s a shocking line of interest as k.

Kenda credited a childhood trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo as his looking into the mirror moment. After reading a sign on the trip that read, “Round this corner is the most dangerous animal alive,” Kenda must have realized that he wanted to face death (literally).*100041 *

A love thriller from that time could only have led to the human lie detector (as many know him) becoming a lieutenant today.

Kenda joined the Colorado Springs Police Department in 1973 and eventually ran the Home Division. His media appearances began long before we knew him for Homice Hunter.

In 1990, Kenda described a case in which a woman was killed in her lupus support group as “meeting standard for a Hollywood conspiracy.” The statement caught his attention through People magazine and several books.

Towards the end of his career, Kenda’s wife, Kathy, told him she feared he would be killed on the job. Eventually, Kenda retired from the Homice unit in 1996, but not because of his wife’s concerns.

An early Joe Kenda, with no scar on his nose

He explained in a book that after an encounter with a child molester in which he almost physically assaulted the abuser, he decided to quit his job.

It wasn’t the only memorable case. Kenda recalled that the worst crime he had to solve was the horrific murder of a child that reminded him of his own.

Kenda would then be unhappy as a special needs school bus operator, as revealed in the latest episode of Homice Hunters.

Joe Kenda returns to Discovery with a new series.

The final episode of Homice Hunter aired in June 2019, after six riveting seasons spanning nineteen years of his career. But like I said, it wasn’t long before the Hollywood cop returned to our hearts and TV screens with another true crime series.

His new show “American Detective with Lt. Joe Kenda” premiered on January 4, 2021. The program, which premiered a year after Homice Hunter, covers home investigations across the country.

Each episode invites an investigator from the Home Office to Kenda’s apartment to investigate her efforts to put a murderer behind bars.

Kenda told The Gazette, the producers and he insisted on presenting the show as best as possible. “Well, we worked really hard on it,” says Kenda.

To add to the mystery, as we’ve already established that Kenda is the best at it, they decided to showcase cases that hadn’t received much media coverage when they signed – to give viewers the feeling of something new to see.

Retired American Police Officer

Joseph Patrick Kenda[2][3] is a retired Detective Lieutenant with the Colorado Springs Police Department who, over his 23-year career, has been involved in 387 residential cases and solved 356, a completion rate of 92%. .[4][5] He can be seen on the TV show Investigation Discovery Homece Hunterwhere he tells stories of cases he has solved. Early Life

]

Kenda was born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. His paternal grandparents immigrated from Čezsoča in present-day Slovenia in 1913; His grandfather Josef, after whom he was named, was killed in coal mining in 1933 with an accent. His father, William, served as an intelligence officer in the US Army during World War II and later ran a trucking business. His mother Virginia (née Morrissey) was originally from Colorado Springs.[6] Kenda was fascinated with crime, particularly murder, from a young age. He recalls a childhood trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo, where a sign near the primate house proclaimed, “The World’s Most Dangerous Animal Is Around This Corner”; As Kenda rounded a corner, he stared into a mirror.[7]

He graduated from Greensburg Central Catholic High School in 1964.[7] He attended the University of Pittsburgh and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Mohler, in 1967. After graduating with a B.A. in political science, Kenda earned a master’s degree in international relations from Ohio State University in 1970.[9] He gave up plans for a foreign service career after a verified briefing with the Central Intelligence Agency left him unfazed.[7] He worked for a time in his father’s trucking business.[10] In 1973, Kenda, his wife, and two children moved to Colorado Springs, where he joined the police force.[7] Kenda credits his uncle Dan Morrissey with inspiring him to become a police officer.

Law Enforcement Career

]

At the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), Kenda eventually became a home detective. He worked from 1977 to 1980 and from 1984 to 1996 in the home department of the CSPD. He eventually headed the Home Department. “I loved the work,” he says. “My wife – not so much.”[7] He examined 387 homework cases and resolved 356, a 92% completion rate.[4] He attributed his ability to close cases to being a connoisseur of human nature and good at spotting when people were lying.[10] In 1973 a young Spanish woman shot herself in her apartment building and when police arrived they found the woman had been dead 4 days. This was Kenda’s first time seeing a dead body and it shook him to the core. Kenda questioned if he made the right decision to become a police officer, saying, “I came home that night, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t do anything.” The next day, Kenda sat in his police car and made the decision that he wanted to do the prosecution.

After not being allowed to take part in an investigation into a shooting that nearly ended his life in 1974, Kenda was even more motivated to become a detective. Kenda said he wanted to be part of the resolution. In 1977, Kenda finally got his chance when he volunteered to take on an attempted murder case that seasoned detectives deemed unsolvable. Detectives laughed at Kenda but eventually gave him the case. Kenda’s only event was a bracelet with the name “Ingr” engraved on it. As the days passed, Kenda wondered if he would be able to solve the case, but he refused to give up. Kenda decided to travel to every jeweler in Colorado Springs that owned an engraving machine. Kenda was concerned that the bracelet was made out of town but refused to consider the possibility. Kenda eventually found the store and by looking through the receipts he found Ingr’s address. He then looked up every inducement at the address and found out that Ingr’s boyfriend was 21-year-old Fred Henry Swain.Swain had a very long criminal record, including assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery. Kenda knew he’d found the right man, but feared a lack of justice would prevent a warrant from being issued. Kenda wrote a 17-page warrant detailing everything about the case in hopes of convincing a judge. The judge agreed and Kenda set off to make the arrest. Kenda and a colleague successfully arrested Fred Swain as he approached his residence. Seeking more justice, Kenda eventually found the gun used in the shooting at Fred Swain’s home. The detectives were stunned that Kenda had solved the case and after his hard work was done, Kenda was officially transferred to the Homice Unit. He stayed home for 3 years until he was promoted to sergeant in 1980. In 1984 he returned home.

On September 12, 1990, Kenda investigated the murder of 32-year-old mother of three, Dianne Elaine Hood, who was murdered outside of her lupus support group meeting by a masked assailant who took her purse. The attacker was later identified as 28-year-old Jennifer Reali. After more than an hour of intense interrogation, Reali finally confessed to killing Dianne Hood. However, Reali shocked Kenda and his team when she revealed that the mastermind behind the murder was Dianne’s own husband, Brian Hood. Reali explained that she had been having an affair with Brian Hood for the past eight months and that Brian kept pushing her to kill Dianne. Brian had told Jennifer that her life would be better off if Dianne were dead. Hood told Reali that if she makes the murder look like a robbery gone wrong, the cops will believe it was a random crime and never be able to find out who did it. And with a $200,000 life insurance policy for Dianne Hood, Reali and Hood believed they would get the money and live happily ever after. On December 23, 1991, Brian Hood was found guilty of two counts of charges and one charge of conspiracy to murder his wife, Dianne Hood. However, Hood was found not guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to only 37 years in prison, leaving Kenda and his colleagues disappointed. Three months later in 1992, Jennifer Reali was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. According to Kenda, the case “met the standard for a Hollywood conspiracy” and garnered a lot of media attention, including a story in Peoplemagazine and several books.[8]

Towards the end of his career, Kenda became consumed with his work and even called himself an “adrenaline junkie”. His wife Kathy was convinced he would be murdered on the job. However, Kenda didn’t care because he was obsessed with his work. In a bad part of town on November 9, 1995, a 14-year-old K who slipped into the wrong crowd named James Leonard “J.L.” Jackson was killed while driving with his friends. Hours earlier, Jackson and his friends had exchanged death threats with their high school rivals, which meant nothing because being ks was ks. After the threats were made, one of the Ks named Matthew called his older brother, Eugene Tuiletufuga, and told him that Jackson’s friends had threatened to kill him. Eugene, who is actually a gangster, was outraged and grabbed his Mac-11 and headed to school. Finding the car that J.L and his friends were in, he mercilessly opened fire, killing J.L. When Kenda was solving the case, he got home around 1am to find Kathy crying. She confronted him that she couldn’t wait for him anymore. At that moment, Kenda considered retiring. His family moved to Falcon, Colorado in 1993 and Kenda retired three years later. Kenda later explained in his book and in a 2018 interview that his decision to retire was motivated by a stimulus in August 1996 involving a 74-year-old man who sexually assaulted his five-year-old grandson; Since there were no open interrogation rooms that day, Kenda had the man taken to his office. When the man tried to justify his abuse by saying the boy “came on him,” Kenda recalled that he “just wanted to kill this guy,” and laid hands on him before other officers stepped in and Kenda ordered the man taken out of his office. He then sat down at his typewriter and typed out his letter of resignation effective September 1, 1996.[11][12]

Over the next few years, Kenda was dissatisfied with retirement and went through a phase of withdrawal.[7] He then worked for a decade beginning in 1998 as a special needs school bus operator.[1] Both his exit from the CSPD and his time as a bus driver are featured in The End, the final episode of Homice Hunter. Kenda had developed PTSD through his work, which he describes as “having a nightmare while awake.” However, Kenda thinks it was worth it.
On November 30, 1991, 16-year-old teenage runaway Margaret Ann “Maggie” Fetty was murdered by her friends and dumped in the mountains. As Kenda was conducting his investigation of the crime scene, he noticed a fox who sat down and watched as they investigated the crime scene. The fox refused to leave and when Kenda and his team finished, the fox eventually ran away. After the case was solved, no one called or asked for Maggie. Kenda and his colleagues decided to bury Maggie Fetty themselves. When they wanted to buy a headstone for Maggie, Kenda asked her to put a fox on the headstone. When they put Maggie to rest, it was a heartbreaking reminder for Kenda of why he chose a career in law enforcement.

TV career

By 2008, Denver based series editor Patrick Bryant worked as a freelancer for multiple production companies for over ten years after editing over two hundred episodes of various series on networks such as Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, HGTV, Food Channel and TLC. He also edited sizzle reels for production company development departments and assisted in their efforts to sell new series to television networks. In 2009, Bryant decided to try his hand at independently creating his own series as a producer. Unscripted reenactment American crime series were very popular at the time, a logical choice for Bryant’s first attempt. Years earlier, Bryant had lived in Colorado Springs and worked at a local television station when Kenda ran the Major Crimes Unit. Bryant had interviewed Kenda as part of a TV special about the local drug trade in the context of a rising home rate. Kenda made a lasting impression on Bryant as a great interviewer. In 2009, Bryant contacted Kenda to discuss the possibility of developing a television series based on his career as a home detective. Kenda was slow to respond, but eventually reached an agreement to continue development of the series with Bryant. A 5-minute sizzle reel created by Bryant and Kenda was shown to FOX21 Studios in Los Angeles, who bought the series from several television networks. It was acquired by Investigation Discovery in 2010 and went into production in February 2011.

Kenda surprised TV producers when they asked him to read a script. He refused, stating, “I’m not an actor. i am a cop If you want me to tell you about this case, I will. If you want me to read this, get someone else.”[7] He spoke impromptu for 15 minutes without a script, and the producers loved it. For the remainder of the series, he worked without a script. The series, titled Homice Hunter: Lt Joe Kenda, first aired on the Investigation Discovery network in September 2011 and became a top performer in viewership. Kenda was known for his unerring, no-nonsense portrayal of the often grisly details of the crimes he investigated and for his repeated statement, “Well, my, my, my…” which quickly became his catchphrase. In each episode, Kenda’s memories of the present day are interspersed with re-enactments as well as additional commentary from police officers, journalists, victims’ families and others involved in the cases.

Kenda gave the producers 30 of his previous cases to read, and they chose the 10 they felt would be most appropriate for television audiences. The first season was filmed in Hollywood, but all re-enactments since then have been filmed in and around Knoxville, Tennessee.[1] Casting calls for actors were regularly held in the Knoxville area. The younger Kenda was portrayed by actor Carl Marino, a former deputy sheriff in Monroe County, New York. Kenda admitted he looked at the case files before filming, but his memory of the cases is “absolutely perfect” as the details of the murders he investigated were “seasoned into your brain.”[8] Each episode took four hours to shoot. He was very impressed by the show’s success, which ran for nine seasons[13] and was broadcast around the world.[7] Kenda announced in May 2019 that the ninth season of Homice Hunter would be the last as she believed the number of cases remaining was not enough to sustain another season as it was either “too easy or just too easy “to be gross on TV” and prefer to end the series “at the top of my game.” The series finale, aptly titled “The End,” aired on January 29, 2020.

However, he continued to appear on other Investigation Discovery programs.[14] In early 2020, Kenda told an interviewer that he was filming a new series but was unwilling to prove specifics.[15][16] In December 2020, the new series was launched as American Detective with Lt. Joe Kenda, with Kenda discussing the cases of various home detectives across the United States in each episode. It premiered on January 4, 2021 with the launch of new streaming service Discovery+.[17]
