Jorge Bacardi, whose family has been making rum and other spirits for 150 years, has suffered since childhood from primary ciliary dyskinesia, a debilitating lung condition that almost took his life. This experience inspired the Bacardis to give back in 2009. They, along with other family members, made the lead gift to build the Gabriel House of Care on the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Flora, to demonstrate affordable, long-term housing and a supportive environment for visiting transplant and radiation oncology patients .

The facility’s name honors Christopher Mark Gregory, who lost his life at the age of 19 and whose organ donation enabled Jorge to receive his transplant. Before Jorge knew his organ donor by name, he wrote a heartfelt thank you letter to the donor family, in which he referred to Christopher as “Gabriel”, his saving angel.

The story behind the Gabriel House of Care begins long before the house’s Ea was conceived. It started in the 1940’s with a young boy who was wrongly diagnosed with cystic fibrosis – later found out in his 40’s.

This boy was Jorge Bacardi.

A member of the well-known Bacardi family , which has been selling rum and other fine spirits for 150 years. But a determined young Jorge survived his doctors’ predictions of not surviving his childhood and then became the vice in the family business Bacardi.

It wasn’t until Jorge was 40 years old that doctors realized he wasn’t really on suffered from cystic fibrosis. The real diagnosis was actually a congenital disease called primary ciliary dyskinesia.

“I’ve made some wonderful friends and meeting the Gregorys was…just super nice,” he says. “It meant a lot.”

Given what is going on in society today, from the coronavirus to protests, Elordi is sa that the film’s release is perfectly timed.

“It could be the kind of film that can give people a little bit of hope that they need,” he says. “I think it would be rewarding to just sit down and just process it and take it for what it is.”

“Who wouldn’t want that body?”

A decade ago, this was 19-year-old Christopher Gregory’s mischievous way of explaining to his parents why he became an organ donor when he renewed his driver’s license in Maryland. During his sophomore semester at Loyola New Orleans, he chatted with his family during a break. His father,Eric Gregory, remembered the prankster years later for two reasons: First, he captured his son’s sense of humor. And second, it was tragically prescient.

Just days after making that comment, Chris died suddenly of a ruptured brain aneurysm.

In the days following his death, the Gregory family — who had flown from Baltimore to New Orleans to be with their son — struggled with their grief and shock. Meanwhile, five strangers who were near death and on the organ transplant waiting list received a call. They left what they were doing — exiting a doctor’s office, making final financial arrangements, getting ready for a cookout at work — and rushed to nearby hospitals — in Shreveport, Louisiana, and New Orleans, and in Jacksonville, Flora. Chris’ lungs, heart, liver, pancreas, two knees, corneas and tissues were recovered and then flown or driven to hospitals for transplantation. Recipients included a then 63-year-old family member and Bacardi Rum Dynasty executive who had flown to Jacksonville from the Bahamas, as well as a 46-year-old entrepreneur, a 64-year-old retired office manager and two former military personnel in their 50s – all from cities across Louisiana.

Even in his desperation, Eric Gregory, a UPS risk manager now based in Phoenix, was impressed by the complex logistics, timing and rap coordination required to pull off this unusual five-way organ donation . He prayed that one day he could meet the people who received the gift of his son’s organs.

Eric was also aware of the professionalism of the people helping and the many kindnesses he and his family – sons John and Colin and his wife Grace – received during their darkest hour. There was the Cajun orderly who burst into tears as he performed the last, unsuccessful brain activity test on Chris. There was the surgeon who confessed that he had lost his own son to a brain aneurysm. There were the Jesuit priests of Loyola New Orleans who were always present offering holy sacraments and support. There were Loyola students filling the waiting room. And there were the nurses, silent but with tears on their faces, lining the hallway as Chris’ family said goodbye to him.

Marveled at the drama and humanity of those few days, the father often thought: “This is a story that should be told.”

Nine years later, Eric put the story aside. In 2017 he self-published All My Tomorrows: A Story of Tragedy, Transplant and Hope. The book chronicles in compelling detail the story of Chris’ life and death that impacted his friends, the campus community, medical staff, family and others.

Chris was big in stature and heart: 6 feet, 4 inches, nearly 200 pounds. His shoes were a size 14. He was ebullient; While visiting a friend, he once threw himself into bed with his friends’ parents to watch TV with them and ignored their shocked laughter – like it was the most normal thing in the world. He had a shockingly poor fashion sense, probably thanks in part to his color blindness. He was a friendly and smart joker who occasionally underperformed in school to have a good time. Guitar and baseball were his loves. He got his friends’ families to give him “fridge rights” in their homes.

The book also weaves in stories of people who, thanks to Chris, have been given a new chance in life. Eric was able to meet them in person, interview them – and befriend them.The reader learns intimate details, such as how many of the recipients went through nagging “false alarms” to prepare for organs that ended up not working – in Jorge Bacardi’s case, just hours before it was compared to Chris’ lungs. Or how some recipients have grappled with ethical issues, such as whether someone over 60 should receive a young man’s organs. Or how Nic Whitacre was literally sent home to die the day Chris’ death certificate was signed; Whitacre was one of several recipients who said their final goodbyes when they received “the call.”

“I didn’t realize how close they were to death until I met them,” says Chris’ mother Grace. “They viewed death at the same time as Chris viewed death.”

When Eric wrote the book, he wanted to bring to life the stories of how these lives and hopes intersect.

“If her life matters, then Chris’ life mattered and his sacrifice means something,” he argued. “Without the miracle of the organ transplant, I’m just another grieving parent who can’t wait for Father’s Day to end. All of this speaks to the integrity and dignity of human life. We’re all in this together.”

Major Motion Picture
We are also about to see Chris’ story on the big screen. A few years ago, the now sane Jorge Bacardi and Man on Fire film producer Conrad Hool landed on the same Pacific cruise and struck up a conversation. Chris’ story is being made into a film called 2 Hearts. Filming in both Vancouver and Hawaii began in June and is expected to end on July 31st. Starring aspiring teen heartthrob Jacob Elordi as Chris, it will primarily focus on the stories of Chris and Jorge, played by Designated Survivor actor Adan Canto.

Conrad Hool’s daughter Carla is the casting director. She won an industry award for her casting in the blockbuster animated film Coco and has been recognized for her efforts in expanding the roles of Latinx actors in films. Eric is played by Tahmoh Penikett, better known as Helo on Syfy’s Battlestar Gallactica. Actress Kari Matchett plays Grace.

The way to the shoot had some bumps. Eric, Grace and the Bacardis spent several years going back and forth with a number of writers about scripts that didn’t sound entirely true. For example, first author Chris had his friends call him “Bro” — which he didn’t. The author also had Chris take selfies. “Christopher would kick himself before he took a selfie,” says Eric, laughing. “Christopher wasn’t Pee-wee Herman, he was Steve McQueen. He doesn’t let up in front of people he doesn’t know.”

Hool was compassionate. His niece, Veronica Hool, an actress and screenwriter, eventually sat down with Eric’s book and tried to really channel Christopher.

“She nailed it,” says Eric. “The final version made me laugh and cry.”

Grace says she appreciates that Chris’ memory is being kept alive – through the book, through organ recipients and now the movie – even though it’s bittersweet. “As a parent, you’re so proud of your son for saving five lives, probably countless lives with tissue donation that we don’t even know about,” she says. “We are reminded of Chris every time we correspond with one of his organ recipients. It is an absolute blessing.”

This Whole Person
Eric also says that the people he met on this journey brought him back to a purposeful life. “I thought I buried my passion the same day I buried Chris,” he says. Well, “there are two things that are really close to my heart: organ donation and the Society of Jesus. The people involved in both are good, decent people doing good in the world. I want to be a stronger advocate for both.”

The roots of the Jesuits run deep in the Gregory family. Eric received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgetown University, where his oldest son, John, also received his master’s degree. John and his middle son, Colin, both attended Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C., and Colin was graduating from Loyola New Orleans, which Chris was attending when he died.

Eric and his family greatly admire the Jesuit ethos of educating the whole person and “meeting people where they are” – even if that means entering chaotic emotional situations, such as entering the room of a dying teenager at Tulane’s medical center. “It seems like every big event in the Gregory family, there was a Jesuit in the room,” he says.

Grace says she will always be grateful that JesuitsJim Caime, S.J., M.Div. ’02and Ted Dziak, S.J. were there for anything the family or their close friends needed, be it shelter, food or comfort. “They led us in prayer and they prayed with us, and I felt completely carried by their presence,” she says. “In that respect, I’m not worried about anything.”

Eric wrote about how Caime would often accompany Colin onto the medical center grounds to smoke parliaments when the stress became unbearable. “Let a Jesuit know exactly what to do at such a moment,” Gregory wrote in his book. “Colin didn’t need scripture lectures or grace lessons or the sacraments… He needed someone to share a cigarette with.”

Theological Studies
In 2017, Eric Gregory’s quest to become a better organ donation advocate led him to enroll in an online Master of Theological Studies at SCU’s Jesuit School of Theology.

“If you have the opportunity to go to the Jesuit School of Theology and that is one of your passions, why wouldn’t you?” he says. And a degree in theology proves the basis for wanting to confront head-on the enormous moral, ethical, and social issues associated with organ donation. He has also become, as he puts it, “unapologetically against” war and the death penalty, as well as against abortion and medically-assisted suicide. “I don’t want to judge anyone who isn’t,” he says. “But I want to figure out what we can do to make everyone unnecessary. And let’s work to get there.”

As he explains, the tragedy of losing his son made Eric protective of life in all its forms. “When you’ve chosen a coffin for your own child, you see life differently,” he says.

In his self-published book, All My Tomorrows: A Story of Tragedy, Transplant and Hope (2017), he describes the heartfelt empathy of those around him and the incredible process and impact of organ transplantation. In the same year, while promoting organ donation and exploring its intersection with his Jesuit faith, he enrolled at Santa Clara University’s Jesuit School of Theology for a master’s degree in theology.

Eric and Grace live in Cave Creek, Arizona, where Eric, after leaving his 30+ year job at UPS in 2018, is now a writer, speaker and volunteer for the Donor Network of Arizona. Grace, who is a registered nurse, is now working in Phoenix as far as we can tell. The two enjoy spending time with their granddaughters and family. Grace has mentioned that she is grateful that Christopher’s memory is kept alive through her husband’s book, the organ donation community and most recently the film 2 Hearts. However, the memory is understandably bittersweet.

An important role.Jacob Elordi found a new challenge when he got the lead role in the upcoming movie 2 Hearts, which is based on the true story of college student Christopher Gregory*100006 *based.

“When I came on board I met his family – they really are a wonderful family and the film was a real family affair,” the Euphoria star exclusively told Us Weekly. “It was a super personal story for her. I met Chris Gregory’s parents and we had some really wonderful experiences. In the end it was a little journey in itself.”

The film is based on Gregory’s father Eric’s 2017 book All My Tomorrows: A Story of Tragedy, Transplant and Hope. Chris tragically died at the age of 19 after suffering a brain aneurysm. He then donated his organs to five different people including Jorge Bacardi of the Bacardi Rum Dynasty. The film chronicles Chris’ love story with Sam (Tiera Skovbye) before detailing another love story that happens in the same period – Jorge (Adan Canto) who turns into Leslie (Radha) in love with Mitchell).

“I tried to do as much research as possible,” the Kissing Booth actor told us. “We actually shot a pretty big chunk of the movie before I met his parents. I met her in Hawaii and by that point we had shot most of the film.”

At the meeting, Eric Elordi revealed that his son “reminded him of Steve McQueen,” something that upset the actor.

“I was just like, ‘F-k. I screwed up the whole thing because I wouldn’t do Steve McQueen anywhere near,” laughs the native Australian. “But I think he was happy with that. Hopefully. I want to bring him before and much love to her family.”

Even though this film was shot years ago – it was the first role Elordi got after The Kissing Booth in 2018 – the actor shared with us that he’s not picky about the types of scripts he’s drawn to feels.

“I don’t think about it too much. Because, you know, I could do any film I wanted if I found that script appealing,” he says. “I just want to be part of real human stories – talkative plays with real characters with real flaws that have real conversations.”

2 Hearts hits theaters on October 16th at Fray.
